Description

unsent messages (eg. those rejected by the SMTP server) get copied to the sent folder, deleted from the drafts folder, and the draft window closes!

The message should remain in the draft window, in an unsent state so that any errors with it might be corrected if possible.

The draft window shouldn't even close until the mail server has either accepted or rejected the message. The message should only be put in an outgoing queue if the mail server connection cannot be opened, or if it gives a temporary error response code at some point.

That depends on whether or not you are using local queues. Check the setting for your SMTP account ...

  • status changed from new to closed
  • resolution set to wontfix

When local queues are used the draft is first put into the queue for sending, then copies are made to mailboxes, then the window closed. After that the queue will process the message. If a failure occurs you can go to the queue window and re-open the draft from there. Sending it again will result in a second sent-mail copy - but that will have the correct info in it.

A slightly better approach might be to automatically open drafts that have failed so there is an immediate visual que to the user - or provide a button in the error dialog to open it. If you think those might be useful please write up a feature request.
