Error opening Exchange Inbox: "specified message set is invalid"

Description
When I attempt to open the Exchange inbox, a window opens and displays the available messages, but an error dialog immediately opens; clearing the dialog closes the inbox window. The full message displayed in the error dialog is: "Could not search a mailbox: The specified message set is invalid."
This appears to be related to Rules. Deleting all of the rules I had defined cleared the issue.
